Soil is the loose surface material that covers most land. It consists of inorganic particles and organic matter. Soil provides structural support to plants used in agriculture and is also their source of water and nutrients. Soils vary significantly in their chemical and physical properties. Leaching, weathering, and microbial activity combine to make various soil types. Each type has particular strengths and weaknesses for agricultural production.
During the International Year of Soil in 2015, global attention was drawn to the importance of healthy soil. One of the critical facts emphasized by the food and agricultural organization was that sustainable management of soils could lead to a 58% increase in food production. Soil nutrient composition plays a crucial role in determining the earth’s goodness. Healthy soil will have all the essential elements to support healthy plant growth throughout its life cycle. However, when the soil has been cultivated, it may require the addition of organic or inorganic fertilizers.
